Dizziness is a frequent symptom of MS. People with MS may feel off balance or lightheaded. Vertigo is the sensation that you or the things around you are spinning.
These symptoms are due to lesions—damaged areas—in the complex pathways that coordinate visual, spatial, and other input to the brain needed to produce and maintain equilibrium.
Usually, the symptoms respond to antimotion sickness drugs such as meclizine (Antivert® or Bonine®), or the newer skin patches which deliver scopolamine. In very severe cases of dizziness or vertigo, a short course of corticosteroids may be needed.
